N.Y. Funeral Director Jailed for Embezzlement

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A funeral director has been sentenced to six months in jail for embezzling $175,000 from a widow's estate before she died, according to a report by The Associated Press.

Paris Childs, 49, who operates Childs Funeral Home in Akron, pleaded guilty in October 2009. The funeral director's license was also suspended for five years and he was ordered to pay $5,050 in fines and fees.

Relatives of the victim, Olive Reiman, allege that Childs took an additional $500,000 of her funds after obtaining power of attorney but authorities said the $175,000 was the amount prosecutors could prove he'd taken.

Childs has already paid back the $175,000.
